A decade after the meat processing machines were shut down, efforts were made to revive the Slaughterhouse but only on a small percentage of its total surface area. Different machines have replaced the old ones. Generators and sound systems now produce a completely new type of noise; not the sound of manual labor but urban, which result from an ambitious hypothesis about the first Zagreb cultural district („meatpacking“ district). Red colour was before flowing down in streams on thousands of square meters of tiled floors, and now is a by-product of new activities; this time they are the food of urban scene. In that way this space, metaphorically, maintains its primary role. As there are no long term plans for the area of the Slaughterhouse, and current activities are performed without any invesment made in the infrastructure of the abandoned space, a question must be raised: will this red light only feed private equity or will it, in the long run, provide benefits for the city`s cultural disctrict. |
